The Hellenic Football Federation (HFF / EPO) was founded on November 14, 1926, by the collective decision of the three major regional football unions: Athens, Piraeus, and Thessaloniki. Its establishment marked the birth of organized football in Greece under unified, international standards. The federation quickly gained international standing, joining FIFA in 1927 and later becoming one of the founding members of UEFA in 1954. Over the past century, the HFF has grown into the largest sports federation in the country, expanding from early domestic cup competitions to managing thousands of amateur and professional clubs. The definitive crowning achievement in Greek sports history, deployed as massive underdogs, Greece shocked the world by defeating host nation Portugal in both the opening match and the final to lift the European Championship trophy in 2004.
