The Premier League is the highest level of men’s football in England and the top division of the English football pyramid. Founded in 1992, it brings together 20 clubs for a season of home-and-away league football, producing 380 matches in total. Three points are awarded for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat, with the club accumulating the most points crowned Premier League champions. The bottom three clubs are relegated to the EFL Championship and replaced by three promoted Championship clubs. The competition has developed into one of the most internationally recognised domestic leagues, featuring major English clubs, leading players and managers from around the world. Its history includes dominant periods for Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool, as well as memorable championship successes by Blackburn Rovers and Leicester City. The Premier League also provides routes into UEFA club competitions and sits at the centre of England’s domestic football calendar. The 2026–27 season runs from August 2026 to May 2027.
