Flags of Nation that still appear on FM FIFA Ranking.zip 185.5 kB · 0 downloads

those aren't official flags, and the use of some is strongly discouraged (like the snake flag). furthermore, there is parallel use of different flags for a region/territory, so selecting one would be arbitrary. it's best to keep these in the »alternatives« folder, because their official flag is the flag of france as they are overseas territories of france.

generally speaking, just because there is something online doesn't mean that it's correct, it has to be researched on a case by case basis.

I see, so there is consideration behind it. Fyi, I got them from wikipedia and its quite reliable source.

I will add an alternative folder for flags and members can choose whatever they would like to do with them. I've researched a bit and found the below.

Mayotte - Based on the coats of arms but not the official flag. I have seen it used widely though.

Réunion - The unofficial flag of Réunion from 2003 used officially by various local authorities.

Chinese Tapai - The flag is no longer officially used in mainland China since 1949. The Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee flag (known in Chinese as the 'Plum Blossom Banner') is derived from and used in place of the flag of the Republic of China at the Olympic Games and in some sporting events. I believe this is why SI would have used the current flag in the pack.

Saint Barthélemy - Based on the coats of arms but not the official flag.

Guadeloupe - Flag used by the independence and the cultural movements but not the official flag.

French Guiana - Flag of the former departmental council of French Guiana, disbanded in 2015.

Martinique - Civil ensign of Martinique, a St Michael cross with white snakes. Also called the 'snake flag' of Martinique. Its use is sometimes controversial.

Saint Martin - This flag cannot be seen anywhere on the island. The local political leaders never saw it nor heard about them.

Saint Pierre and Miquelon - Locally used flag of Saint Pierre and Miquelon, modelled after the coat of arms but not the official flag.

Wallis and Futuna - Unofficial flag of the Territory of the Wallis and Futuna Islands which looks more like a civil ensign (maritime flag) and not the official flag.

wikipedia in many cases isn’t reliable, sadly. there is a steady decline of editors, because often you have a few users who have hijacked topics/articles and then they gang up on others who edit against the former’s point of view (edit wars and the like), administrators do the same. it’s a good starting point, but no more than that. depending on which language edition you end up on, you will find conflicting information:

example of racing club de france -- it’s an omnisports club, meaning there are sections for different sports, among them football.

german wikipedia with outdated logos, but not the correct current one for the football section:
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/RC_Paris

spanish wikipedia with the logo of the main omnisports club, but not the one of the football section:
https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racing_Club_de_France_Football

russian wikipedia (same as spanish):
https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Расинг_(футбольный_клуб,_Париж)

french wikipedia with the correct logo:
https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racing_Club_de_France_(football)

english wikipedia has the correct logo as well, but often the logos are outdated or incorrect there. primary sources (official club sites, official club social media, official league/competition sites, official municipality web sites, official federation sites) are the ones that count, not wikipedia, regardless of how convenient it is to go there.

@Derek has elaborated more on the flags, i wanted to keep it short. but here is the issue with the many flags of martinique -- there are at least six flags that have been used to represent martinique:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Martinique

locals strongly oppose the use of the snake flag (it was used for ships in the transatlantic slave trade) (in french) -- french president macron ordered the martinique branch of the national gendarmerie to stop using it as its emblem (in french):

https://la1ere.francetvinfo.fr/martinique/citoyens-refusent-que-drapeau-aux-quatre-serpents-represente-martinique-545373.html

@Markitos, great job. 👍

@handarugema, this is another case where wikipedia has the incorrect logo, they just copied the historic logo of the argentinian club (spanish wikipedia) -- markitos took the correct logo from their official facebook page:
https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Club_Atlético_Nacional_Rosario_Central

So should this logo be included?

image.thumb.png.f86fa6d642871cb69a8f4fdd532c6bb9.png

yes, absolutely! i was being unclear -- markitos had it spot on, it’s from their social media page.

this was more a follow-up comment to my wikipedia statement, where the article on the club has the argentinian historical logo.

i’ve edited the post to clear it up.

The Logo in the pack is correct, the one you posted is pre 2016 (Royal Olympic Club de Charleroi-Marchienne)

(they also use a version with a wreath around it, but the one w/o is the current official one)
